# Actual Budget Alternative in 2026: Multi-Currency, AI, and SQL Access

Actual Budget can label accounts as EUR, USD, or GBP, but it still calculates the budget as if every amount used one currency. Its own documentation is refreshingly clear: Actual is currency agnostic and [does not support multi-currency natively](https://actualbudget.org/docs/budgeting/multi-currency/).

That doesn't make Actual a poor budget app. For a one-currency household that wants envelope budgeting, offline access, polished imports, and optional bank connections, it may be the better choice.

The case for an **Actual Budget alternative in 2026** starts when the data model no longer fits: several native currencies must reconcile independently, two people need explicit workspace membership, or a remote agent or non-Node service needs HTTP access. [Expense Budget Tracker](/features/) is built for those jobs. It also gives up some of Actual's conveniences, including built-in financial-file imports and linked-bank sync.

Neither product is a drop-in replacement for the other.

## The short answer

Stay with Actual if envelope budgeting shapes how you manage money, a local copy on every device matters, or you rely on its imports, bank connections, rules, schedules, reports, or optional end-to-end encryption.

Test Expense Budget Tracker if you need native multi-currency records, a shared SQL-backed workspace, hosted MCP, or a direct HTTP API. Go in with the main limitation understood: there is no bank feed. You enter transactions yourself or explicitly ask an agent to process a statement or file. Agent writes, transfer pairs, and resulting balances still need human verification.

The first question isn't which row has more features. It's which rows describe requirements you can't compromise on.

## Actual is still the stronger choice for envelope budgeting

Actual's default method assigns money you already have to envelopes. It also offers a traditional [tracking budget](https://actualbudget.org/docs/getting-started/tracking-budget/) for forecasting income and expenses, but the envelope workflow remains its defining strength.

Its local-first architecture is equally important. Actual keeps the budget on the device and, when a server is configured, [syncs changes through that server](https://actualbudget.org/docs/getting-started/sync/). You can keep working offline. The server is strongly recommended, but Actual's [installation guide](https://actualbudget.org/docs/install/) confirms that file imports, budgeting, reports, schedules, and budget-file import and export work without one. The desktop apps add automatic backups and ready-to-use offline access.

The day-to-day transaction workflow is mature too:

- [Actual's import flow](https://actualbudget.org/docs/transactions/importing/) supports CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX, and CAMT files, matches likely duplicates, and can connect to supported bank-sync providers.
- [Rules](https://actualbudget.org/docs/budgeting/rules/) can clean payees, set categories and notes, and run during imports.
- [Schedules](https://actualbudget.org/docs/schedules/) handle recurring or one-off expected transactions, either automatically or with approval.
- The [report dashboard](https://actualbudget.org/docs/reports/) is customizable and includes cash flow, net worth, spending analysis, and custom reports.
- Optional end-to-end encryption protects synced budget data before it leaves the device.

That last point has limits worth knowing. Actual's sync docs say end-to-end encryption doesn't cover local device data or bank-sync credentials stored on the server. Full-disk encryption and control of the server still matter.

If these features already solve your household's real problems, don't migrate for a longer feature list. Move only when a missing capability is expensive enough to justify replacing a workflow that works.

## Multi-currency changes the ledger, not just the display

Actual's official workaround is honest about what it does. You create rules for each foreign-currency account, put the original value in the transaction notes, provide an FX rate, and replace the transaction amount with its converted value. The guide warns that the rule-template feature is experimental and may contain bugs or disappear.

That may be fine for a few occasional purchases abroad. It becomes awkward when a household regularly receives EUR income, saves in USD, spends from a GBP card, and needs each account to reconcile in its own currency.

Expense Budget Tracker keeps the original amount and currency on each ledger entry. Daily rates from ECB, CBR, and NBS convert entries into the workspace's reporting currency when the data is read. The stored transaction isn't replaced by a pre-converted amount. Transfers between owned accounts are first-class ledger entries, including transfers across currencies.

This gives you three useful checks:

- reconcile each account in the currency shown on its source statement
- combine accounts in one reporting currency without erasing native amounts
- keep transfers out of income and spending totals instead of treating money movement as new activity

## The two products mean different things by “API”

Actual's official API is not an HTTP or REST service. The [API documentation](https://actualbudget.org/docs/api/) describes `@actual-app/api`, an npm package that runs the application headlessly, downloads a local budget copy, and lets Node.js code query or change it. Other languages aren't officially supported.

The official CLI is another useful route. It covers accounts, transactions, budgets, categories, rules, schedules, and ActualQL. Its [README](https://github.com/actualbudget/actual/blob/master/packages/cli/README.md) draws the boundary clearly: the CLI connects to a running Actual sync server, keeps a local cache, and does not operate directly on local budget files.

For Node automation around an existing Actual setup, both interfaces are capable. They just aren't generic HTTP endpoints.

Expense Budget Tracker exposes two remote interfaces:

- The [hosted MCP connector](/docs/mcp-connector/) uses Streamable HTTP and browser OAuth. `expenses:read` allows workspace discovery, schema inspection, and read-only queries. Mutations require the separate `expenses:write` scope.
- The [SQL Agent API](/docs/api/) uses a long-lived ApiKey. A script can list and select workspaces, inspect the allowed schema, run one restricted read query, or send one approved `INSERT`, `UPDATE`, or `DELETE` statement over HTTP. Row-Level Security still applies to the selected workspace.

Choose Actual's API when your goal is to automate Actual in Node. Choose Expense Budget Tracker when the requirement is remote MCP or direct HTTP from scripts and services in any language.

## A bank connection and an agent import aren't the same workflow

Actual supports linked-bank import through configured providers. It isn't a continuously refreshing feed: the current [bank-sync guide](https://actualbudget.org/docs/advanced/bank-sync/) says you trigger sync from an account or the All Accounts view. Even so, the connection removes the need to download and hand over a statement for every update.

Expense Budget Tracker has no bank connection. Its AI chat, MCP connector, and Agent API can help with statement admin, but only after you start the job. You provide a CSV, PDF, screenshot, or statement; the agent inspects the existing schema and data; then it drafts or writes ledger rows with the access you authorize.

That workflow gives you control over the source and date range, but it also leaves reconciliation with you. After any write, check transaction count, dates, signs, currencies, categories, both sides of transfers, and closing balances. A statement parser can produce plausible rows and still be wrong.

## Sharing and self-hosting solve different problems

Actual syncs a budget file across devices. Its current [multi-user documentation](https://actualbudget.org/docs/getting-started/sync/#multi-user-support) says two people can edit the same file, but recommends avoiding simultaneous use because conflicting edits can cause trouble. Sharing is possible; the budget file remains the collaboration unit.

Expense Budget Tracker makes the workspace the boundary. Users join a shared workspace, while Postgres Row-Level Security keeps its data separate from other workspaces. This is useful when personal and household finances need explicit membership instead of a shared file.

Self-hosting doesn't settle the choice either. Actual is local-first, and a server extends that model with sync, browser access, mobile access, bank connections, and programmatic access. Expense Budget Tracker is a web application built around a central Postgres database; its [self-hosting guide](/docs/self-hosting/) uses Docker Compose for the application services, FX worker, and database.

The operational cost is different. With Expense Budget Tracker, you own database backups, credentials, upgrades, and recovery. With Actual, you still need to operate and back up the sync server if you use one, while each device also has a local budget copy. Pick the architecture you want to recover at a bad moment, not the one that sounds more independent on a feature page.

## A low-risk migration test

Expense Budget Tracker has no direct Actual importer. Keep Actual as the source of truth while you run a small parallel test. The goal is to find mismatches before they spread across years of history.

### 1. Back up Actual and inventory what you'd lose

Create a fresh Actual export and keep it unchanged. Also list the setup that won't move with transaction rows: rules, schedules, report layouts, bank connections, encryption settings, and any custom automation.

### 2. Pick one closed statement month

Choose one representative account and a month with a final statement. If it contains a transfer to another tracked account, include the matching statement period for that account too. A closed month is large enough to expose refunds, duplicates, sign errors, and category gaps while remaining auditable.

### 3. Map the data before writing it

Create a small mapping table outside either system:

Don't redesign categories during the pilot. First prove that both systems describe the same month.

### 4. Start with five to ten awkward transactions

Use a normal purchase, income, refund, fee, and transfer if available. Enter them manually or explicitly give an agent the bounded source file and target workspace.

For MCP, start with `expenses:read`, inspect the schema, and add `expenses:write` only for the approved change. For the HTTP API, select the workspace, inspect the schema, send one approved write, and query the affected rows afterward. There is no direct Actual import step hidden inside either interface.

### 5. Reconcile in native currency

Check:

- opening and closing balances at the chosen boundary
- transaction count and dates
- signs and original currencies
- refunds and reversals
- both sides of every transfer
- duplicates created during testing

Don't use a reporting-currency total to hide a mismatch in a native account. Fix the source row, mapping, or date boundary until that account reconciles.

### 6. Load the rest of the month and test the routine

Once the sample works, add the remaining transactions for the closed month. Compare category totals, income, spending, transfers, native balances, and the combined reporting-currency view. Recreate the reports you actually use in Actual and write down what is missing or materially different.

Then repeat the weekly process you expect to follow. If preparing statements and reviewing agent writes costs more time than Actual's linked-bank import saves, the pilot has already answered the question.

### 7. Switch only after the evidence agrees

Expand one account and one month at a time. Keep Actual and its backups untouched until every in-scope account reconciles and every important workflow has a replacement you have tested.

A cleaner demo isn't a migration result. A complete month that balances, plus a routine the household will keep using, is.

## Which one should you choose?

Choose Actual Budget when you want:

- local-first, offline envelope budgeting
- built-in financial-file imports and optional bank connections
- mature rules, schedules, reconciliation, and reports
- optional end-to-end encryption for synced budget data
- Node package or CLI automation around an Actual server

Choose Expense Budget Tracker when you need:

- native-currency ledger entries with read-time reporting conversion
- first-class transfers and ledger-derived account balances
- explicit shared workspaces with database-level isolation
- a hosted remote MCP connector for compatible clients
- direct HTTP SQL access for agents, scripts, and services
- hosted use or a Docker/Postgres self-hosting path
