Self-Hosted Mint Alternative in 2026: Own Your Budget Data

Looking for a self-hosted Mint replacement? Compare the tradeoffs, map old transactions safely, and build a budget system you can inspect and move.

Intuit's current Mint page points people looking for familiar Mint features to Credit Karma. That covers one managed path. It does not answer the question many technical former Mint users are asking: where should years of budget data live next, and how do you move it without quietly changing the balances?

Expense Budget Tracker is a credible self hosted Mint alternative when ownership, an inspectable ledger, and deliberate imports matter more than automatic bank linking. It is not a drop-in Mint clone. There is no passive bank connection or Mint sync. You record transactions explicitly, or import data you already retained and review the result.

That tradeoff is the whole decision. If you want accounts to update without your involvement, choose a product built around bank aggregation. If you want a finance system you can run on your own Postgres database, inspect row by row, and automate on your terms, this route makes more sense.

This is why an open source Mint alternative is not automatically the best Mint alternative for everyone. Self-hosting gives you control, but it also gives you upgrades, backups, security, and recovery to manage. What you are moving into

The safest migration begins with the destination model, not the CSV columns.

Expense Budget Tracker stores finance data in Postgres. Its accounts view is derived from ledger entries rather than maintained as a separate list of balances. Each ledger entry has an account, signed amount, native currency, and one of three kinds: income, spend, or transfer.

That has a useful consequence: the current balance is not a number you type over whenever the dashboard looks wrong. It is the sum of what happened in the ledger. A bad import therefore remains visible and fixable, but it also means a missing opening balance will stay missing.

The budget is a separate layer. Base plan rows hold the planned amount for each month and category. Later adjustments are stored separately and summed into the effective plan. Actual income and spending still come from the ledger. Migrating transactions first and rebuilding the future budget afterward keeps those two jobs from contaminating each other.

For multiple currencies, each entry keeps its original currency. The workspace has one reporting currency, and daily FX rates are applied when reports are read. Reconcile every account in its native currency first. A converted dashboard total is a report, not the source balance from the bank.

Map the old data before you import a row

If you retained a Mint export, work from a copy and keep the original unchanged. If you did not retain one, use bank and card statements for the periods you can prove. Do not assume that a Mint export is still available now, and do not combine a retained export with statements for the same dates as two import sources.

Write down the mapping before an agent or script receives write access:

A category cleanup is tempting during migration. It is also how a controlled move turns into several projects at once. Preserve the old categories for the pilot. Merge or rename them only after balances match.

Decide what “opening balance” means

You need this decision before choosing an import range because accounts and balances come from the ledger.

Import complete history

If your retained data covers the account from its true beginning and the history is complete, import the full ledger. The resulting balance should emerge from those entries without a synthetic starting row.

This is the cleanest option and usually the slowest one. A long export can contain duplicates, renamed accounts, deleted categories, and transfer pairs that no longer look paired.

Start at a clean cutover date

For most migrations, one closed statement period is a better pilot. Choose the statement's opening date and record the source balance at that boundary.

Expense Budget Tracker has no separate opening-balance field or ledger kind. If you need the tracker to show the real balance from day one, one option is a clearly labeled synthetic ledger entry immediately before the first imported transaction. A positive asset balance can be a positive income entry; a negative card or liability balance can be a negative spend entry.

That row still counts as income or spending in reports that include its date. Put it immediately before the cutover, use a category such as Opening balance, add a note with the source statement and date, and begin normal income and spending analysis after it. The label makes the bridge auditable; it does not automatically exclude the entry from reports. If you need clean reporting across the earlier date too, importing complete history is the safer model.

Track only new activity

You can skip historical balances and begin recording new transactions. In that case, accept that account balances in the tracker will be incomplete. This option works for category tracking from a chosen date, but it is not a valid choice if you expect the Accounts view to match today's bank balance.

A staged Mint migration that protects balances

The useful migration unit is one account and one closed statement period. It is small enough to inspect and large enough to expose refunds, duplicates, and sign errors. If that account has transfers to another account you also track, bring the matching statement period for the paired account or choose a simpler pilot. You cannot fully verify an internal transfer from one side alone.

1. Preserve the source and make an inventory

Keep the retained Mint file, statement files, and any category mapping outside the import working copy. List every account with:

  • a stable destination ID
  • its native currency
  • the first and last available transaction dates
  • the opening and closing balances for the pilot period
  • whether it contains a transfer to another account in scope

Archived or closed accounts still need stable IDs if their history is part of the move.

2. Create a clean workspace and choose the reporting currency

Use a disposable local Docker deployment or a separate hosted workspace for the migration test. Set the reporting currency, but keep the reconciliation sheet in each account's native currency.

Because the Accounts view is derived from ledger entries, an account appears when its first entry exists. That first row may be the documented opening balance or the first real transaction, depending on the choice above.

3. Define one duplicate rule

Use a retained source transaction ID as external_id when one exists. The database does not enforce uniqueness on that field, so a second run must still query the target for the same account and source ID before writing. When the source has no ID, create a deterministic import key from stable fields such as account ID, posted date, signed amount, currency, and the untouched source description. Keep that key in an import manifest and compare candidate rows with the target before every batch.

Do not use event_id alone as the duplicate key for transfers. Both sides of one transfer intentionally share the same event ID.

If a retained Mint export and a bank statement overlap, choose one as the write source. Use the other only to verify counts and balances.

4. Prepare a dry run without writes

Parse the first batch into a review table before inserting anything. Include:

  • source row identifier
  • destination account ID
  • posted timestamp
  • signed native amount and currency
  • proposed kind
  • proposed category
  • counterparty and note
  • transfer partner and both signed amounts, when applicable

Ten ordinary rows and a few difficult ones are more useful than a thousand-row first attempt. Include a refund, a transfer, and a repeated merchant if the period has them.

Stop here if an amount sign or account mapping is ambiguous. A guess at this stage becomes a balance correction later.

5. Insert one small batch

Write only the reviewed rows for the pilot account, plus confirmed matching sides for its internal transfers. Check them in the transaction view immediately. Look for reversed signs, dates shifted by timezone, lost cents, wrong currencies, and descriptions that were cleaned so aggressively that they can no longer be traced to the source.

For a transfer between two accounts you own, create two entries with the same event ID. A 500 USD move from checking to savings is a negative 500 USD transfer in checking and a positive 500 USD transfer in savings. It is not spending in one account and income in the other. For a cross-currency transfer, use the actual posted amount and native currency from each side rather than calculating one side from the other.

A credit-card payment follows the same rule. The original card purchases are spending. The later payment is a transfer from checking to the card account, so counting it as another expense doubles the month.

6. Reconcile before importing another batch

For every account touched by the batch, prove this equation in its native currency:

opening balance + signed posted movements = closing balance

Compare the result with the closed statement, not an available balance that includes pending activity. Then check:

  • source-row and imported-row counts
  • every duplicate candidate
  • every transfer pair and its two account sides
  • refunds and reversals
  • the exact closing balance

If the balance is wrong, stop. Find the missing, duplicated, or mis-signed row. Do not add an unexplained correction simply to make the total green. The budget reconciliation guide has a fuller account-by-account checklist.

7. Expand one boundary at a time

After one period matches, add the next period for the same account. Complete and reconcile both sides of every internal transfer before moving past that period. Only then move to another account.

This sounds slower than one large upload. It is much faster than finding one duplicate transfer inside several years of mixed accounts.

8. Rebuild the budget after the ledger is trusted

Do not create a polished budget on top of unreconciled transactions.

Once actuals match, recreate the base plan for the current and future months. Use budget adjustments for later changes rather than rewriting the reason the original plan existed. Then compare actual income and spend against the plan and review the reporting-currency view.

For a multi-currency household, a native account can reconcile perfectly while its reporting-currency value changes with daily FX. That movement is expected. The source amount should not be rewritten to make the converted total stay still.

MCP or Agent API for the import?

The hosted product now has two separate machine interfaces. They solve similar jobs but use different authentication and credentials.

Use the hosted MCP connector when your client supports it

Connect an OAuth-capable remote MCP client to https://mcp.expense-budget-tracker.com/mcp. The required expenses:read scope covers workspace discovery, schema inspection, and queries. Request the optional expenses:write scope only when the client must change data.

Use the Agent API for terminal agents or direct HTTP

Start at GET https://api.expense-budget-tracker.com/v1/. The discovery response guides the agent through email verification, workspace selection, schema inspection, and the restricted SQL endpoints. Authenticated requests use a long-lived ApiKey.

MCP OAuth tokens and Agent API keys are separate credentials. They are not interchangeable, and neither should be pasted into article notes, prompts, or source files.

The basic local Docker Compose setup starts Postgres, migrations, the web app, the auth service, and the FX worker. It does not start local MCP or Agent API services. Where this open-source Mint alternative fits

Expense Budget Tracker is a good fit when you want:

  • Postgres as the source of truth
  • a hosted option or your own deployment
  • balances derived from inspectable ledger movements
  • explicit income, spending, and transfers
  • native-currency entries with daily FX reporting
  • a budget with base plans and traceable adjustments
  • controlled access for scripts and AI agents

It is a poor fit when automatic bank linking is the main requirement, when you want migration to be a single unattended upload, or when operating and backing up a self-hosted service sounds like work you do not want.

Self-hosting also does not make every connected tool private by magic. If you give an external AI client a statement or authorize it to read financial data, that client and its model provider become part of the data path. Review their policies and grant the smallest access the job needs.

Is Expense Budget Tracker a direct Mint replacement?

No. It covers accounts, ledger entries, budgets, transfers, multi-currency reporting, a hosted app, and self-hosting. It does not reproduce Mint's passive bank aggregation or provide a live Mint connection.

Can it import a Mint export?

Can I run it only on my own machine?

Own the migration, not just the server

A Mint.com local alternative is useful only when the ledger remains trustworthy after the move. Running Postgres on your own server solves the ownership question. It does not solve duplicate rows, broken transfer pairs, missing opening balances, or an agent writing to the wrong workspace.

Those problems are manageable when the migration has clear boundaries: preserve the source, map the model, import one account, reconcile in native currency, and stop whenever the numbers disagree.
